Joseph Michael Colella (70) of Kennett Square, passed away on Monday May 3rd at his home. Born in West Chester, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Nicholas and Mary Jane (Castaldi) Colella. He was the beloved husband of Janet (Macon) Colella, and the couple shared almost 30 years of marriage.
Always the entrepreneur, Joe started his own mobile tack business, Braymour Saddlery, where he traveled around the county and met many of his equestrian peers who would become lifelong friends. He was the consummate equestrian and loved fox hunting with the Brandywine Hunt. Joe was a member of the Carriage Association of America, a founding member of the Brandywine Driving Show, a member of the Willistown Men’s Club and also a board member of the Chester County SPCA.
From driving his four-in-hand down 926 to telling friends everything he knew about Chester County landmarks, Joe truly loved living in his beautiful corner of the world in Unionville. He always enjoyed organizing and leading pleasure drives in the community, whether it was the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup or just heading to polo on a Sunday. “Unionville Joe” as he was nicknamed by many will be deeply missed, as he was a cherished pillar of the horse community.
In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by his children: Justin Colella, companion of Elizabeth Protesto, of Northbrook, PA, Preston Konrad of New York, NY and Grace Konrad of New York, NY. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michael, Everly, and Mason Colella, and his siblings: Marlene Smith, wife of Timothy, of Chester Springs, PA and Michael J. Colella of West Chester, PA.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 10th from 12-2 PM at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave, Downingtown, PA 19335. A graveside service will follow the visitation at St. Malachi Cemetery, Cochranville, PA.
